Furniture Finishes

All of the furniture is finished in the traditional manner by applying french polished shellac. Many coats are hand applied over hand rubbed oil to bring out the wood grain pattern. None of the furniture is sprayed or protected by any other material. You may wish to add a coat of fine furniture wax to the finish or it can be applied before delivery.

These finishing methods take time and for a piece with carvings may require several weeks after the piece is constructed.

Some woods also may require exposure to sunlight before finishing. This accentuates the natural aging qualities of the wood.

Wood grain and color varies greatly from log to log and every attempt is made to use wood from the same log in drawer fronts and another log for sides of chests and tables. The color and grain for drawer fronts and cabinet sides will not match in most pieces. For chests such as highboys and secretaries with stacked drawers, the rail fronts are also from the same board to accentuate the continutiy of the grain.

Dye is not normally used as it is not a traditional method for cherry and walnut as it takes away from the natural wood qualities. Tiger maple is lightly dyed to accentuate the stripes. If the buyer wishes more continuity in color the parts can be dyed. Samples of the dyed wood may be examined, but total continuity of color cannot be guaranteed.
